Introduction to Chat Permissions

Chat in AcceleratorApp is controlled at the role level — what each role can do inside chat is defined in User Role Settings.

If chat is not visible in your platform, contact your AcceleratorApp Customer Success Manager to have it enabled for your instance.

Where to Find Chat Settings

Navigate to General Settings > User Roles Settings. Select the role you want to configure to access the chat permission toggles.

Step-by-Step

1. Configure Chat Permissions per Role

The permissions available to configure vary by role — Admins typically have all permissions available, while roles like Co-Founder may only have a subset. For each role, you can turn the following permissions on or off independently, based on what is available for that role:

  • Access to chat — Allows the role to access chat at all. Without this, users in this role will not see chat.
  • Allow to access the chat — Allows the role to view conversations that are public, even without being a member.
  • Start a new conversation — Allows the role to initiate new direct messages or channels.
  • Start a new channel — Allows the role to create named group channels.
  • Edit a conversation — Allows the role to update conversation settings and membership.
  • Delete a conversation — Allows the role to archive or remove conversations. Note: a user who is a conversation admin can also archive their own conversations regardless of this setting.

Every user can always edit and delete their own messages regardless of role settings. The permissions above only control actions on other users' content.

Best Practices

  • Use Browse public conversations carefully. Roles with this permission can see all public channels without being a member — make sure this is appropriate for the roles you enable it for.
  • If chat is not visible, contact your Customer Success Manager. Chat is enabled at the environment level and cannot be toggled from within the platform settings.
  • Applicants do not have access to chat. Chat access opens automatically once an user becomes a member of a program.
