Configuring Mentor Matching Settings

Mentor Matching Settings determine whether any user who can see a mentor's profile can book a coaching session with them, or whether a direct connection between the mentor and that user (or their program) must exist first before booking is allowed.

By default, a connection is required — meaning that even if a user can see a mentor's profile, they can only book a coaching session if there is an established link between them. To learn more about how to create these connections, see How to Connect Mentors and Startups.

Who can see a mentor's profile in the first place is controlled by the visibility permissions set for each user role. To learn more, see How to Manage Community Access Settings.

2 Open Mentor Matching Settings

Configure Your Settings

  • Require connections for coaching sessions — when enabled, a user can only book a coaching session with a mentor they are directly connected to. When disabled, any user who can see a mentor's profile can book a session with them directly, without a prior connection.

Best Practices

  • Start with connections required. Keeping the connection requirement on ensures mentorship is intentional and organized — open access can work well for large communities, but may lead to unmanaged booking volumes.
  • Combine with community visibility settings. Mentor Matching Settings only affect what happens after a user can already see a mentor's profile. Make sure your community visibility settings are aligned with your mentorship model before adjusting matching rules.
